Whitehaven Beach
Water. The Whitsundays is surrounded by it. Just enough water separates over 74 large and small islands, most within easy cruising distance. Water laps on to countless palm-fringed island and mainland beaches. Just offshore, coral and colourful tropical fish live at dozens (yes, dozens) of reefs fringing many islands. Then there’s the world’s largest living thing, the Great Barrier Reef, out in the big blue. Thirty minutes if you fly, just over two hours on an easy cruise. 2017 marks the
42nd anniversary of the discovery of world famous Heart Reef. Book a flight to see it if you can.
And add iconic Whitehaven Beach to your
must-see list. How many days do you think
you’ll be staying?

A mainland base is your entree to the water and island smorgasbord. The mainland marinas are the starting point for short, day and extended cruises. Take in the majestic and the micro, swim, snorkel, scuba dive or just laze on a beach. Need more water? The kids will love the non tidal, stinger free Airlie Lagoon, and there are resort pools everywhere.
Between November and May, hire or buy a stinger suit to guard against the marine stingers that are a fact of life world wide in tropical waters, including coastal beaches.
Whitehaven Beach voted BEST Beach by Australian Traveller
(Dec 2016) and Trip Advisor (2017)!
Advice to Snorkellers:
• wear a shirt and sun block
• keep an eye on your boat as tidal currents
are unnoticeable in the underwater magic • hire or buy a ‘stinger suit’ Nov - May
