Nelly Bay, DIngo Beach
1. Fill an afternoon
Take a drive through emerald green cane fields and lush rainforest. See suggested routes in ‘Drive the coast’ on pages 34-35.
2. Swim in bushland
A cool freshwater pool is fed by Cedar Creek Falls. Spectacular after rain. Hike to the upper falls (no jumping off the top please!)
Learn about coal, the source of this area’s wealth and history.
7. Get Back to Nature
Cape Hillsborough has brilliant walks, beach-loving kangaroos and spectacular sunrises. The kids will love it.

8. Go Cosmopolitan
Mackay has plenty to see and do. Time your visit to catch world class shows at the Entertainment Centre. Swim at the Lagoon or a beach and do lunch in the City Heart or Mackay Marina precinct. More on page 44.
9. Discover Sugar Cane
Sarina just south of Mackay has a lovely beach and a sugar cane discovery centre at the Sugar Shed. If time is short take a sunset drive down Riordonvale Rd and Strathdickie Rd - between July and November, you may see a pre-harvest cane fire.
10. Spot a Platypus
West from Mackay are hills clothed in rainforest, walking tracks for all levels, platypus at dawn and dusk, horse riding and more. Locals make a weekend of it in winter for open fires and in summer for the cooler climate.
3. Fish for Lunch?
After the falls, continue along to the Wilson’s Beach boat ramp for off-the-beaten-track river fishing then have lunch a few minutes further on at Conway Beach’s postcard perfect park for barbecues or lunch from the caravan park.
4. Deserted Beaches
Head south on the highway from Proserpine for Midge Point beach, Cape Hillsborough, Haliday Bay, Seaforth, Mackay’s northern beaches and Sarina.
5. Sightsee in Bowen
Beaches, snorkelling, coastal walks, famous murals and the Big Mango are in Bowen. More on page 41.
6. Collinsville Pit Pony Experience
Add 45 minutes to a Bowen visit to see Collinsville, the Pit Pony Capital of Australia.
